How to Start Growing Mushrooms

If you would like to try growing fresh, tasty mushrooms at home, here are a few suggestions:

Try a mushroom kit

Buying a kit eliminates most of the more difficult steps and reduces the possibility of mistakes. Thus you can find out if growing Oyster or Button Mushrooms is for you. Search for ‘kit’ in our Grow Mushrooms store.

Buy a book about growing mushrooms

Reading a book first gives you an overview without getting your hands dirty. Obviously the reference to ‘dirty hands’ is figurative, they should be spotless when you grow mushrooms 🙂 Try our search box with terms like ‘grow mushrooms book’. I’ve just done that … and found a free one 🙂

Pick your mushroom

Perhaps we won’t be picking yet, I mean ‘choose’. For beginners, I suggest button mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus) or oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus spp.). These two types are grown in very different ways, so it may be worth having a flick through a book first to find the one which suits you best. Why not go for a kit of both types to help you decide?
